Introduction

History

The department of information management (Dept. of IM) at Hsiuping University of Science and Technology (HUST) was established in 1994 to recruit business division of technical and vocational educational education of Two-Year Junior College student in the initial stage.

1994- The Evening Division recruited one class of Two-Year Junior College Program.
1995- Approved by Ministry of Education (MOE) to increase one class of Day Division.
1997- Approved by MOE to increase another one class of Evening Division.
1999- Increased two classes of Weekend Affiliated Institute.
2000- Increased another one class of Day Division, Night Division of Junior College and Weekend Affiliated Institute.
2006 to 2007- Stop recruitment of Day Division and Weekend Affiliated Institute of Two-Year College in order to increase teaching performance and adjust and simplify the school institution.

Now, the Dept. of IM has enrolled three classes of Four-Year college programs each year, two in the Day Division and one in the Night Division, plus one class in the Two-Year Junior College program in Weekend Affiliated Institute each year. Totally there are 14 classes and 550 students now. The performance of department of IM is excellent. In 1998, 2003 and 2007, the Dept. of IM was rated by MOE as the first class in the professional evaluation. The high quality performance as well as the outstanding achievements of alumni results in stable and glorious reputation and high employment rate.

Instructional Objectives

Through discussion and analysis, the course committee of the Dept. of IM orientated the instructional objectives as to foster student's ability and potential in analyzing and planning MIS, making them become information management professionals with the ability of integrating information system application, internet technology and business management practice in order to facilitate requirement of actual operation of the business and industry.

Currently the curriculum planning of the Dept. of IM is divided into two main areas, Information System design and management (SDM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). These two main axes are established with contents of Information Platform Technology and management (IPT), based on Information Management Foundation (IMF) so as to cover the major research and application direction of information management. Students can learn complete theory and practice from main axial courses, and choose what they want to study and learn from many subjects, according to their interests. Besides, after-class instructions are conducted to strengthen students' ability in practicing so that they are able to be familiar with soft and hard ware of business industry and improve the ability in overall planning.

Development Features

Based on knowledge management, the Dept. of IM emphasizes on combining of theories and practices. To the purpose of study for application, the Dept. of IM involves its curriculum into the collaborative opportunities with commercial business. The Dept. of IM also integrates with the Dept. of Information Networking Technology and the Dept. of Information communication to build the multi-dimension fostering channels for information technology.

Equipment and Facilitie

  • Information Management Fundamental Lab(A0505):The Lab. provides foundation courses such as Program Design or Business Applications Software.

  • Project Management Lab(E0302):The Lab. provides students space and equipment so as to discuss when making practice project.

  • Cloud and Network Technology Integration Lab(E0303):This Lab. purchased Cisco Network Laboratory Instruction System and Provide Cloud Technology Course for instruction.

  • Information Management Center(E0401):The center builds a network server、NAS network storage device and Workstations and other equipment. It also builds system platform of ERP system, CRM system, marketing module software, decision support management module software for providing teaching connection.

  • ERP AND IOT Applications Lab(E0402):The Lab. provides ERP and IOT Practice courses for instruction.

  • Information System Design and Management Lab(E0403):The Lab. supports courses such as Database System, Database Management System, Database System Practice, Unix System for practice, etc.

  • Other supporting instructional equipment:Dept. provides SLR camera, digital VCR, laptops, digital video and audio compression integration system, single LCD projector, long-distance learning system, and variety of licensed software.

Faculty

In 2012 academic year, there are 19 full-time professional teachers who own official teacher's certificates issued by MOE. The faculty members include 7 associate professors and 10 assistant professors.

Integrating professional certificates training into the pedagogical syllabus and counseling mechanism is one of the focuses of the Dept. of IM. Main effort of this integration has significantly shown in its course programs and teaching activities that ensure students' unceasing motivation to upgrade their professional skills and prove their competence via professional certificate at the end of the day. To meet the goals mentioned above, the department encourages its faculty members to take part in internationally recognized elite teaching-training programs during summer and winter break. Once the faculty members gain certificates on certain subject, the Board of Departmental Course and the Team of Teaching Experiment will adopt the corresponding subject into courses, and budget these courses for training contents and supportive equipment respectively. It is important to note that, as a result of the above effort, this department boasts of having a choice faculty in which all the members are outfitted with professional certificates, and this certainly paves for a potential success of this department.

Scholarship

The HUST provides a number of scholarships to award or subsidize students with good performance or from straitened families.

Future Development after Graduation

Employment:

Students may serve in private organizations or government agencies after graduating as follows : MIS programmers, e-commerce technology analyst, enterprise resource planner, database management professional, internet programmer, software design engineer, firmware design engineer, computer hardware engineer, software and firmware test engineer, video game programmer, digital content designer, knowledge management professional, systems analyst, system management engineer, network management engineer, system maintenance operator, information assistants, business personnel, etc.

Further studies:

Students may apply for graduate program in related fields such as Information Technology or Business Management, etc. for further studies.
